Duluth is the hardest climate we work in, and it is not close. Wind comes off Lake Superior with nothing to break it, the hillside puts many homes on a slope that funnels weather straight at them, and the snow load on the upper streets is in a different category from the metro. A shingle rated for high wind only performs to that rating if it is nailed correctly and in the right pattern, and on a Duluth roof that detail is the whole job.

The housing is also old. Large parts of the city date from the 1890s through the 1920s, with steep pitches, dormers, turrets and cut-up rooflines that take real flashing work rather than a fast tear-off. Ice damming is the other constant. On these homes it is almost always attic ventilation and insulation rather than anything wrong with the roof surface, and we would rather fix the cause than sell you heat cable that hides it for another winter.
